Located less than 30 miles south of Houston, League City had a few name before a feud between George W. Butler and J. C. League was resolved. In 1907, League arranged for two railroad flatcars of live oak trees to be left near the railroad tracks. His intention was for the residents to plant them on their property. Butler and his son oversaw the planting of these trees, and they are now known as the Butler Oaks.
