About: Chester, PA

Chester is located in southeastern Pennsylvania. The city was originally located in what was part of a Swedish territory called New Sweden. It was known as "Finlandia," then "Upland." When William Penn arrived in "Upland," he renamed the settlement Chester, in honor of the English city of Chester. The city's naval shipyard supplied the Union during the Civil War. It continued to serve the US during subsequent wars, until Philadelphia became the predominate shipyard.
